Pol Pot
Pol Pot was the primary leader of the Khmer Rouge, but his peers included Nuon Chea, Ieng Sary, Son Sen, and Khieu Samphan. His revolutionary activities began when he studied radio electronics in Paris; he became involved with the French Communist Party. He later joined a Cambodian Nationalist group of young men that went on to become leaders in the Khmer Rouge alongside him. With the formation of the Communist Party of Kampuchea, he became its General Secretary. After the Khmer Rouge takeover, he was instated as prime minister of Democratic Kampuchea. His reign was oppressive and was characterized as dictatorship. After the Vietnamese overthrew him, he and his party fled to Thailand where he organized further fighting against the Hanoi supported Phnom Penh. By this point, his influence in the military had decrease yet he remained a source of guidance.
